This three Grade II listed cottage dating from the 17th century had a two-story extension added at the end in the 1990s, with a reef thatch to match the original cottages and ship-lap boarding walls. The clients wanted to build a new attached single-storey extension to expand their kitchen/ dining room, adding a sitting area with a wood stove and view of the garden.
The new extension is a modern, minimalist ‘box’, with walls clad in natural, light coloured, vertical timber boarding and a flat roof covered with zinc. It wraps around the corner of the existing extension and provides an important connection with a large garden: an entrance to the house through a porch and boot room and views to the rear and side garden. The living room has plenty of light through a flat, frameless rooflight and patio doors on two sides.
